What is Relationship OCD (ROCD)?

 

Relationship OCD is an anxiety disorder that consists of obsessions about relationships (romantic or otherwise), followed by compulsive behaviors you do in response to the uncomfortable thoughts, feelings and situations to "get rid of" the discomfort you feel as a result of them.

 

Some common ROCD obsessions include, but not limited to:

  • Am I with the "right" person or making the "right" decision?
  • Do I really love my partner or do they really love me?
  • Am I (or are they) a "good enough" partner, parent, or friend?
  • What if I'm not happy in the future?  
  • Are we compatible enough?
  • Why do I find myself attracted to others?
  • The intrusive thoughts and obsession possibilities are limitless!

ROCD has a strong impact on the sufferer, but can also negatively affect the other person and relationship.  Proper treatment is required in order to alleviate symptoms and often greatly improves the relationship.

Why can't I let these thoughts and feelings go?

 

Someone with OCD will struggle to let these thoughts go and haven't learned to cope with uncertainty & imperfection, so they respond with unhealthy mental and physical reactions (compulsions) like:

  • Avoidance of the person or investing in the relationship
  • Reassurance seeking from friends, family or the Internet
  • Checking things mentally or physically like your feelings, their reactions, texts, behaviors, etc.
  • Hyper-focus on flaws of the person, the relationship and what "might go wrong, or your own thoughts/feelings
  • Rumination or constant thinking about relationships, past, future
  • Comparing your relationship or partner to others
  • Self-Reassurance or giving oneself reassurance about the fear/doubt to alleviate the discomfort
 
*** Note: these are just some of the most common compulsions.
